Nourished for Nil Social Supermarket Social supermarkets are accessed through agency referral or by prior arrangement with Nourished for Nil. We do not accept walk-in clients – you must have a booking.

Clients are given a booking date and time for their shop. Appointments are accessible by agency referral only.

What is a social supermarket?

Social supermarkets aim to create a dignified experience for people and whānau experiencing food insecurity, by offering food and grocery products at a low or subsidised cost. Shoppers use a points system, and have the dignity of choosing food that is right for their family.

Our Social Supermarket

Nourished for Nil’s social supermarkets are stocked with a range of grocery items, just like a regular supermarket. Each item is allocated a point value rather than a dollar value, so shoppers can spend their point allocation to choose food that’s right for their family.

Social Supermarket Points Customers are allocated a number of points based on the size of their family, and make a contribution to the cost of their shop, as follows:

Points System

  • Single adult: 55 points, $30 contribution
  • Family of three: 65 points, $40 contribution
  • Family of four: 70 points, $45 contribution
  • Large family: 75 points, $50 contribution

Partnership that makes it possible

Nourished for Nil’s social supermarkets are supported by Foodstuffs North Island, who have partnered with local community organisations to set up and run social supermarkets across the North Island. Each social supermarket is run as a partnership with a focus on strengthening relationships and helping local communities to thrive.
