Can of Kindness

In collaboration with Foodstuffs North Island, PAK’nSAVE Tamatea and PAK’nSAVE Napier City, Nourished for Nil’s Social Supermarket are super excited to introduce … Cans of Kindness.

So what exactly are Cans of Kindness?

This initiative is all about Kiwis helping Kiwis, something we’ve always done. It’s really simple and it works like this. Customers shopping at Napier’s two PAK’nSAVE stores can purchase a $5, $10 or $20 Can of Kindness (from the displays near the checkouts) at the same time as their grocery shop. Their can is then scanned at the checkout with the rest of their shop and an instant donation is made to the Social Supermarket. Please leave the can behind

All funds, that’s every single dollar, from Cans of Kindness purchases go directly to the Nourished for Nil Social Supermarket in Onekawa. These funds help reduce running costs, ensure long-term sustainability of the service, while providing another revenue stream to increase the volume of food we procure and deliver into the community.

But wait, what’s the Social Supermarket again?

Despite their best efforts, many Kiwis are struggling to put food on the table. All it takes is a car breaking down, a sudden illness, redundancy, or another unforeseen cost, and food is often the first thing to go from the budget, resulting in food insecurity for the people around us.

Nourished for Nil’s Social Supermarket helps improve food security for affected individuals and whānau by providing kai with kindness. In a dignified supermarket shopping environment, they get to purchase essential grocery items using a points system, which they can access through social agency referrals.

Points allocated based on whanau size:

Single person = 55 points $25

Family of 3 = 65 points $30

Family of 4 = 70 points $40

Large Family 8+ = 75 points $45

Shopping takes place in a quiet safe space where people are booked in for 15-minute slots. Every shopper is given an explanation of how the store works, a trolley and the option of an assisted shop. Sometimes there’s even a cup of tea and a biscuit available!   

Why are we doing this?

Nourished for Nil, the Social Supermarket, and now Cans of Kindness, are all about providing a hand up, rather than a handout, for Kiwis doing it tough – whether they’re our neighbours, friends, teachers, or colleagues, food insecurity is never far away from any of us.
 

So join us and make a difference, help uplift those in our community who not just need it but deserve it. And remember, every donation made is a step towards a kinder, fairer, more supportive community.

Sobering facts
 

  • More than 17% of households in Aotearoa suffer from food insecurity, that’s around 1 million fellow Kiwis who don’t have enough to eat.

  • 1 in 5 kids live in a household that struggles to put food on the table.

  • Food insecurity is linked to a range of negative health outcomes.

  • Children who are food insecure are more likely to have lower academic achievement.

  • Food insecurity leaves less money for housing, healthcare and education.

  • The Nourished for Nil Social Supermarket has provided 1600 Hawke’s Bay families with essential food supplies since September 2023. Imagine what we can do with your help!

  • The Social Supermarket store is safe, clean, well-stocked and provides dignity of choice for all shoppers.

  • 1 day a month is allocated solely for Age Concern Hastings, Napier and Flaxmere residents.

  • We work with over 30 registered agencies who refer people to our supermarket. See below for the full list.

  • Nourished for Nil have been in operation since 2017 and through their various services every week, support over 1200 local families.
