Volunteer Spotlight: Moori

Updated: Mar 3, 2019

Moori (left above) is one of Nourished for Nil’s amazing volunteers.

Originally from our awesome region, Moori spent a few years overseas and moved back about four years ago.  Moori is described by one of Nourished for Nil’s founders, Christina, as a ‘volunteer extraordinaire’ and she’s so efficient and friendly, we’re currently looking for ways to clone her and create five more of her!  We had a chat with Moori about how she finds being one of our volunteers.

How did you find out about Nourished for Nil?

I saw Christina’s post in the You made my day – Hawke’s Bay Facebook group back at the start of January and it instantly seemed like something I wanted to be involved with.

What makes the Nourished for Nil cause so appealing to you?

I like the idea of taking a zero-waste policy and using it to fill the gap – there are too many hungry people out there who have difficulty accessing resources.

How often do you volunteer your time?

Currently, I’m helping as often as I’m needed, which is most days.  My goal is to do about two afternoons each week, which will be achievable as we attract more volunteers.

What tasks do you do when volunteering for Nourished for Nil?

I’ve done a little bit of everything (both pickups and distribution), so I understand how the whole process works.

What are the best things about volunteering for Nourished for Nil?

We get to meet a lot of people and I get to work with a great team of volunteers.  It’s awesome to be helping people and you get a real sense of helping the community.

What would you say to anyone else considering volunteering?

Do it!  In terms of the time commitment, there are shifts that can work around your schedule and days of availability.

Anything else to add?

For those wondering about accessing our service, it’s available to everyone, Monday – Friday.  It’s not like a soup truck where you get given whatever they have, you get the option to choose a couple of items to take.

Thanks for all you do for Nourished for Nil, Moori!  You’re a superstar!!!

If you’re interested in volunteering, we’re always looking for more volunteers. You can contact us via our website - Support Us page or our Facebook page to chat about how you can help
